Columbia’s getting a Halloween flash mob, so now you don’t have to be the only one getting weird looks when you’re dancing down the street jamming to the Sweeney Todd soundtrack or whatever it is you crazy cats listen to as you’re walking to and fro about campus this time of year.
Victoria Day, owner of Embodiment LLC and the coordinator of the flash mob, gave MOVE several hints as to when and where the flash mob will be taking place, but you won’t know when or where the Thriller flash mob is happening unless you go to one of the workshops. She says she hopes it could be in conjunction with the Citizen Jane Film Festival.
“It’s going to be a flash mob for everyone,” Day says.
To encourage everyone to participate, Day is bringing the killer moves of Michael Jackson down to a level that even the most rhythmically challenged can conquer. This means we all can finally check being in a flash mob off our bucket lists.
“There may be some people doing it more like Michael Jackson, but there also could be people in wheelchairs doing a routine mostly with their arms,” Day says. “My goal is to make choreography that’s accessible to everyone.”
The idea for a flash mob grew from a national fitness movement called Dance Walking. Earlier this year, Ben Aaron started this phenomenon where people literally just dance as they walk for fitness, Day says.
Although she’s got the moves, she is still looking for the support. Anyone who wants to participate can go to one of the workshops at Yoga Sol on St. James Street this Saturday or next Saturday, Oct. 13, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Day is asking for $5-$15 donations from participation to help cover costs of renting the workshop space.
And if dancing is not your thing, you can also get involved by videotaping the flash mob and helping to spread the word. You could be famous! And by famous, I mean YouTube famous.
