Compiling a movie soundtrack has become a lost art. But it should be pretty easy, right? After all, the only things that need to be done are pick a few songs that fit into the movie, throw them onto a CD and sell it to the general public.
“The Perks of Being a Wallflower” soundtrack is a bit different, however. For those who have seen the movie or read the book (although the soundtrack directly coincides with the movie), it’s pretty evident music is the heart and soul of the story. It’s a force that shows affection, provides escape and makes connections. At the same time, it chronicles the troubling times of adolescence.
“The Perks of Being a Wallflower” soundtrack does all of these things beautifully. In its 12 tracks, the soundtrack not only brings to mind the story that inspired it, but also echoes the teenage experience. Some moments will make you want to dance (Dexys Midnight Runners’ “Come On Eileen”), and some moments will bring tearful memories (The Smiths’ “Asleep”). And still, some moments (David Bowie’s “Heroes”) will evoke the sense of wonder that comes with growing up and learning how to deal with the ups and downs of the crazy world we live in.
