Baseball season ends in Florida

After Missouri beat Ole Miss in their first game of the NCAA Regional 7-0, they lost to Miami 6-5 in the second round. With a 1-1 record the Tigers had an opportunity to advance to the final round of the Regional, if they could beat Ole Miss for a second time.

But in the second battle, Ole Miss came out on top by a score of 9-6, and ended Missouri’s season.

MU took a 4-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning against Ole Miss, but the Rebels responded with a four spot of their own in the bottom of the fourth.

In the top of the eighth inning the Tigers took a 6-5 lead, but once again the Rebels responded. Left fielder Logan Power hit a grand slam in the bottom of the eighth to give Ole Miss a three run advantage.

Missouri failed to comeback in the ninth. The Tigers had an overall record of 39-21 and were once the fourth-ranked team in the nation.

Track and Field heads to NCAA Championship

Two Missouri athletes received an automatic bid to the men’s track and field NCAA Championship in Des Moines, Iowa. Junior Chris Rohr and senior Jason Morris both had top-five finishes in the hammer throw at the NCAA Track and Field Mideast Regional in Fayetteville, Ark., which guaranteed them a spot in the championship round.

Morris finished fifth overall at the regional with a throw of 213 feet, 11 inches. Rohr placed third overall with a personal record of 220 feet, 10 inches. This distance was one of the top 10 throws by collegiate athletes all year. The winning throw came from Auburn’s Cory Martin who hit 239 feet, 10 inches.

Other members of the Missouri team have the possibility of making the national championship via an at-large bid. Sophomore Brian Hancock pole vaulted 17 feet, 1-inch, and finished in seventh place at the Regional. Hancock’s has a chance to make the national championship because of his 17-feet, 5-inch flight earlier in the season.

Basketball recruit receives MVP award

Incoming freshman Marcus Denmon showed how he could make a difference for the Missouri basketball team next season by scoring a game-high 25 points and collecting seven rebounds in the Class 1-3 Missouri Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame All-Star game last Friday. Denmon received the Most Valuable Player award for the game.

“He can definitely come in and have some playing time next year,” Gabe DeArmond, editor of www.Powermizzou.com, said in an interview with a Maneater reporter earlier this year. “He may be pushing for quite a bit of playing time and even averaging double digits if what we hear about his scoring is true.”

Denmon opened up the game by making three consecutive three-point shots. His team won 89-75.

“He’s a scorer,” DeArmond said. “He put up 40 points in just one half of a game last year before his coach took him out. If you need 30 he can give you 30. If you need 50 he can give you 50.”

The 6-foot-3 guard is the 88th ranked recruit in the country according to Scout.com.

In his senior season Denmon averaged 28.5 points per game and 5.8 rebounds per game.
