
February marks the beginning of Black History Month, honoring the stories of Black Americans and recognizing their central place in American history. This month’s theme, Black Health and Wellness, honors the legacy of Black medical practitioners and “considers activities, rituals and initiatives that Black communities have done to be well,” according to the Department of Black Studies at MU. Throughout the month, there are various activities taking place virtually, in-person or in a hybrid setting that students can participate in on and off campus.
Screening of “Southside With You”

Organized by the city of Columbia’s Parks and Recreation, the annual Black History Month screening will be “Southside With You,” depicting Barack and Michelle Obama’s first date.
Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis

Doors open at 6 p.m. and the concert starts at 7 p.m.

Wynton Marsalis returns to Columbia for the first time since 2016 as a part of the city’s Black History Month celebration. The Juilliard grad, winner of a Pulitzer Prize and many Grammy awards is one of the best-known jazz musicians of the present age and has graced Columbia stages many times throughout his lucrative career.
Gospel Explosion & Soul Food Dinner Musical Celebration
Feb. 27, 2022, 4-7 p.m.
St. Luke UMC, 204 E Ash
The annual event will feature local artists and groups as a part of a celebration of Black musical culture. Afterwards, soul food will be offered. Covered food is welcome.
Black Parenting as a Bedrock: Insights for Black Youth and Adults’ Morals, Motivations and Functioning

Jordan Booker, assistant professor in the MU department of psychology, will speak at a virtual event centering around the emotional development of teens, children and adults. The link to register is here.

Working within the theme for this month’s celebration, the State Historical Society has created an exhibit centering around Black health and wellness. This event is open to everyone!
