Are you living the single life this Valentine’s Day? Is your significant other in another state? Chances are you aren’t the only one. Don’t worry though — there’s plenty to do online and around Columbia to keep you distracted this Feb. 14th.
If you don’t already have a membership at Daniel Boone Regional Library on West Broadway, get your computer out. Here are five books to go on a blind date with this Valentine’s that you can rent with a library card either online or in print. These books may also be offered at Ellis Library and bookstores across Columbia.
- “Normal People” by Sally Rooney
Follow troubled teenagers Marianne Sheridan and Connell Waldron through this adult novel as they grow up weaving in and out of each other’s lives. Set across the U.K. over multiple years, this book is a perfect angsty romance to match the chilly weather. If you’re anywhere on BookTok or Bookstagram, you’ll know this viral hit. Available online and in person.
- “Pride and Prejudice” by Jane Austen
“Pride and Prejudice” made the required reading list for your high school English class for a reason. A classic, tumultuous romance with layers of timeless meaning and drama, this book is perfect if you appreciate the complexity of love within a rigorous social hierarchy — or if you want your crush to think you’re smart. Available online, in person or as an audiobook.
- “They Both Die At the End” by Adam Silvera
If you’re looking for an LGBTQ+ romance, try “They Both Die At The End.” Silvera’s young adult novel offers a heartbreaking exploration of love and loss that takes place over the course of a single day. Prepare to fall in love with Mateo and Rufus as they navigate their final hours, but keep a box of tissues nearby — you’ll need them. Available online, in person or as an audiobook.
- “Everything I Know About Love: A Memoir” by Dolly Alderton
Alone on Valentine’s Day? So is Dolly Alderton. Her funny, gripping and relatable adult memoir recounts her experiences dating, drinking, being dumped and ultimately finding love within herself and her friends. If you’re struggling with the single life or just feeling extra sentimental about your galentines, this one’s for you. Available online only.
- “The Song of Achilles” by Madeline Miller
“The Song of Achilles” offers a retelling of the Homeric myth of Achilles, this time from the perspective of Patroclus, his friend — or in this version, his lover. Another tear-jerker, this young adult novel is a great pick if you’re looking to escape reality or relive the days of Percy Jackson novels. Available online, in person or as an audiobook.
On a serious note, Valentine’s Day can be a difficult time. Remember, plenty of people don’t meet the love of their life until long after they receive their degree. Regardless of your situation, never settle for less than you deserve.
Whether you’re single, taken or somewhere in between — happy Valentine’s and happy reading from everyone at MOVE!
