As September comes to a close, this edition of Significant Statistics covers important figures from the beginning of MU’s school year.
$25 million- The amount awarded to MU by the United States Department of Agriculture’s Partnerships for Climate-Smart Commodities Program. As the largest federal research, education and extension grant ever awarded to the university, this money will go toward helping Missouri farmers adopt climate-smart practices. This five-year project is led by Rob Myers, an adjunct professor in the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources. With partnerships from programs across the university, the project is expected to support up to 3,000 Missouri farmers improve resiliency of farm operations in the face of extreme weather and a changing climate.
$1.6 million- The amount awarded to MU by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to study firearm violence exposure among young adults, ages 18-24, experiencing homelessness. Hsun-Ta Hsu, an associate professor in the School of Social Work, will lead his research team in firearm violence prevention work as they study how communities can best respond to their findings.
$1.5 million- The amount received by MU from the Department of Education to continue the Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program for the next five years. This initiative encourages first-generation college students and students from traditionally underrepresented groups to enroll in graduate studies at 151 institutions across the country and Puerto Rico. MU currently has 29 active scholars in the program from multiple disciplines.
53,253- The number of attendees at the Sept. 17 home football game. The Tigers defeated visiting Abilene Christian with a score of 34-17 — the highest attended game during Head Coach Eliah Drinkwitz’s three years in this position.
23,571- MU’s undergraduate population entering the 2022-2023 school year, per preliminary enrollment figures. More than 5,000 new freshmen enrolled in the fall semester, a 2.7% increase from last year.
20%- The commission students can receive for any single-game ticket they sell for a MU ticketed sporting event. This year, Mizzou Athletics is offering what they are calling the first opportunity of its kind in the country, as they are now paying members of the student body for joining the ticket sales team.
6- The number of regular season Volleyball games slated to be nationally televised on SEC Network or ESPNU this fall. These include upcoming games against the University of South Carolina, Auburn University, the University of Mississippi, the University of Arkansas, Texas A&M University and the Tigers’ Sept. 21 SEC opener against Tennessee.
4- The number of soccer players named to the SEC Preseason Watchlist. The Watchlist, released Aug. 17, consists of 67 total players. For the third consecutive year, it lists four MU players, including junior defender Grace Pettet, redshirt freshman goalkeeper Bella Hollenbach, and freshman midfielder Hannah Boughton. Sophomore midfielder Milena Fischer rounds out the list as the only student-athlete out of the four to be selected previously.
