Have you ever wondered how some people are just so fashion-forward? They are always wearing styles seasons before they’re on-trend, and they’re always able to spot up-and-coming designers. One tip these fashionistas always follow is keeping up with New York Fashion Week. New York Fashion Week, or NYFW for short, is a way for designers to show off their latest collections before they debut. Seasoned fashion houses help set the trends, while up-and-coming designers can make themselves known.
If you haven’t been following NYFW this year but still want to keep up with the latest fashion and beauty trends, you’ve come to the right place. I’ve broken down the hottest NYFW collections and found the best, school-appropriate things to add to your closet and makeup bag.
First up are clothes. Before we get to the trends, here are some overall tips. Please, don’t feel as if you need to buy a whole new wardrobe or get brand-new, expensive clothes. All of these trends can be found at any thrift store or can even be made yourself.
One of the biggest trends out of NYFW that can be easily followed is dramatic silhouettes. An easy way to achieve this effect is by wearing an oversized top and a fitted bottom, or vice versa. Another — bolder — way to make your silhouette more dramatic is by wearing an oversized top and an oversized bottom. It’s all about the drama, so adding more structured pieces, like oversized jeans and blazers with shoulder pads, will also do the trick.
Another amazing trend that can be easily incorporated into your closet is mixing nightlife into your daytime wear. While I’m not saying wear your bar-hopping outfits to your 8 a.m. lecture, a little shimmer here and there can’t hurt. Sequined and shimmery tops had a moment this fashion week, and while some shine can be daunting, it can be done subtly. Wearing a top with monochromatic sequins or subtle shimmery embroidery will make your look pop.
Early 2000’s clothing, better known as Y2K, is a style that’s here to stay. There has been less of a focus on Y2K apparel trends, such as low-rise jeans, but a further emphasis on vintage, early 2000s bags. One of the most iconic bags of this time, the Fendi Baguette, just had its 25th anniversary and was all over NYFW this year. Early 2000s bags like shoulder bags or crescent bags can be easily found at thrift stores or online. You can probably find some sort of 2000s purse in your parent’s closet!
Long denim was a hot item this fashion week, found in many washes and colors, from dark navy to acid washed. This trend was mostly found in midi and maxi-length denim skirts. However, this trend can also be achieved by wearing long wide-leg denim jeans.
NYFW had many trendy colors and patterns this year, including bright lime, hot pink, light orange and floral patterns. I would recommend looking for clothing in these colors and patterns sooner rather than later so you’ll truly be ahead of the curve when everyone is wearing these colors a couple of months from now.
The hair and makeup trends at this NYFW were varied in skill level and boldness. I find hair and makeup trends much easier to follow and way lighter on your wallet. For runway makeup, color was all the rage, including pastel highlighter, bright single-colored eyeshadow looks and saturated blush. These colorful looks can be easily achieved with a rainbow eyeshadow pallet and a small eyeshadow brush.
There were hints of grunge on the models this year as well. Heavy eyeliner and smudgy brown eyes were seen on many runways, alongside vampy lip colors. This makeup will look great as we move into the fall and colder weather.
There were many different hairstyles found on the runway this season, with updos and ponytails running the show. Slicked-back hair is here to stay, which is easily achievable with a barber brush and some hair gel. 2000ss style half-up pigtails have been making a comeback, as well as side-parts, low buns and messy ‘90s updos were also seen on the runway, which can be done with some hair ties, bobby pins and a YouTube tutorial or two.
While NYFW gave us many amazing trends this season, remember to dress only how you want to and stay true to your personal style above all. NYFW trends allow us to experiment with our fashion, adopt what styles we like and let go of the ones we don’t, no matter how viral they are.
