Missouri soccer defeated Florida 3-2 Sunday after losing three of their last four Southeastern Conference games.
Freshman Elena Zuchowski scored her first collegiate goal with Missouri in the first two minutes of the match. Zuchowski’s goal is Missouri’s quickest goal time since junior Grace Pettet scored in the third minute against SIU in the season opener.
Following Zuchowski’s goal, freshman Kylee Simmons scored in the 28th minute putting Missouri up 2-0 heading into the second half.
Florida senior Tessa Barton headed the ball in to score for the Gators in the 53rd minute puttingFlorida on the board.
The Tigers were awarded a penalty kick in the 66th minute after Simmons was dragged inside the box. Sophomore Milena Fischer scored the penalty kick to put the Tigers up 3-1.
Fischer’s penalty kick was the first successful penalty kick for the Tigers this season.
Florida senior Syd Kennedy scored in the 84th minute closing the gap 3-2. Missouri’s defense was able to hold Florida following Kennedy’s point to secure the win against the Gators.
Freshman Hannah Boughton made both assists to Zuchowski and Simmons to help the Tigers stay in the lead.
This season has showcased the young talent at Missouri. Freshmen accounted for three of four shot attempts on Florida, Boughton contributed with two assists and freshman Bella Hollenbach made two saves.
As the Tigers look to the final four games of conference play, Head Coach Stefanie Golan said, “[We need to] continue to clean up our attack, focus on high percentage looks and continue to shore up defensively.”
Missouri will travel to Georgia Friday for a 6 p.m. CST kickoff with the SEC Tournament beginning on Oct. 30 in Pensacola, Florida.
