The MU men’s and women’s swim and dive teams opened the weekend with the last regular season meet, defeating Southern Illinois after multiple athletes from both teams took first in their respective races and events.
Coming back after a tough loss to Tennessee, Missouri men’s and women’s swim and dive teams came back strong to defeat Southern Illinois at the Mizzou Aquatic Center on Jan. 27th.
The Tigers men’s team won 190-99 and took first in 13 individual events and two relays.
Seniors Jack Dahlgren, Clement Secchi and Carlo Lopez led the team, with Dahlgren winning the 50 free (19.72) and 200 back (1:40.66), finishing 6 seconds faster than second place Tiger Noah Scheurmann.
Secchi took first in the 200 fly (1:43.25) and the 100 fly (46.05), 3 seconds faster than SIU’s Nicolas Barrio Lanuza, and Carlo Lopez took first in the 3-meter diving event with a score of 350.40.
Missouri’s women’s team also beat SIU 199-88, winning 14 individual events and two relay races.
Senior Molly Gowans finished first in the 200 free (1:47.28) and the 500 free (4:50.84), while freshmen Fernanda de Goeij, Malin Grosse and Kamryn Wong each won two events.
Goeij won the 200 back (1:57.22) and 400 IM (4:16.90) and Grosse took first in the 100 and 200 breast events with times of 1:00.64 and 2:10.73, respectively. Gowans won the 200 free (1:47.28) and 500 free (4:50.84), and Wong finished first in two events: the one-meter (270.95) and three-meter (296.65).
Junior Jane Smith took first in the 1000-yard free with a time of 10:04.82, 38 seconds faster than second place Apryl Paquette from SIU.
The Tigers hope to keep their momentum going ahead of the Southeastern Conference championship, after finishing strong in their last regular meet of the season. The SEC championship rounds will take place from Feb. 14-18 at the Allen Jones Aquatic Center in Knoxville, Tennessee.
