The Residence Halls Association voted on several pieces of legislation, approved a funding request for a future event and honored the Great Pyrenees Harlan during its Feb. 8 congress meeting.
The MU Residence Halls Association passed legislation honoring Harlan, MU’s beloved Great Pyrenees who passed away from a stroke, during a congress meeting on Feb. 8.
Representative Cody Jenkins, a freshman who represents Hatch Hall, authored Resolution 52-01: In Memorial of Harlan.
“I’ve only been here for a semester but I fell in love with Harlan within that one semester,” Jenkins said. “I think RHA deserves to recognize him as this icon, and just this really important part of the campus and within the students’ lives.”
A funding request for $12,000 toward a future Truman Central concert event was also approved during the session. The Truman Central neighborhood houses Defoe-Graham, Dogwood, Galena, Hawthorn, Johnston and Wolpers halls.
RHA also approved an amendment authored by the speaker of congress, junior Dalton Lytle, to add a concurrence clause to the RHA Constitution and bylaws. This clause will allow both the constitution and bylaws to be altered simultaneously in a piece of legislation. Previous rules required two separate pieces of legislation to alter both the Constitution and bylaws.
While RHA functions as student government at MU, there is a desire to give back to MU students behind the formal procedures and legislation.
“I want people to fall in love with Mizzou as much as I love Mizzou,” Director of Resident Engagement and junior Johannah Wilding, said. “So, being able to transfer that feeling of school spirit to them [students], would be my goal for the school year.”
Similarly, Jenkins also wants to leave an impact on MU students through legislation he said he will introduce in future weeks.
