The MSA’s Campus Affairs Committee met for the first time this semester on Feb. 7 to discuss upcoming events and proposed legislation.
The Missouri Students Association’s Campus Affairs Committee held its first meeting of the semester on Feb. 7 at 6 p.m. in the Student Center. Members discussed Wellness Week, sustainability at MU and proposed new legislation.
A total of 13 members attended the meeting including Campus Affairs Chair Amy Bianucci and Senate Speaker Lane Cargile. According to MSA’s current legislative assistant Daniel Daugherty, “all MU undergraduate students are automatically ‘members’ of MSA.” However, “committee membership, and therefore voting privileges, is up to the discretion of the committee chair.” Daughtery also shared that sometimes committee attendees are not “confirmed MSA Senators,” therefore, they cannot vote in Full Senate, though they are allowed to vote in committees “at the discretion of the chair.”
Bianucci announced that MSA’s Wellness Week, which is a week full of events promoting health and safety on and off campus, will be moved to the first week of April rather than its previously planned dates, Feb. 27 – March 3. Bianucci also announced the cancellation of the speaker event with “The Millennial Sexpert” that was previously planned. The committee is hoping to generate some new ideas in place of this speaker event.
The committee also discussed its efforts to improve sustainability on campus, including an upcoming meeting with SustainMizzou, a student organization that promotes sustainability on campus.
Cassidy Devore, a MSA member working on projects regarding campus sustainability, met with SustainMizzou on Wednesday, Feb. 8. Devore and members of SustainMizzou discussed adding cardboard recycling bins to residence halls, composting bins and reusable utensils/dishes in dining halls, and the possibility of reusable or returnable to-go boxes. However, according to Devore’s notes on the meeting, some of these ideas, like returnable to-go boxes, are considered infeasible due to short staffing within CDS.
As the meeting came to an end, one member proposed two new pieces of legislation: a proposal to build a memorial for Harlan, the beloved campus dog who recently passed, and a resolution to request affordable MU spirit wear. While the first piece of legislation is being considered but reconstructed, the second gained two co-signers by the end of the meeting.
The committee will meet again in two weeks at 6 p.m, on Tuesday, Feb. 21.
