Happy spring, Mizzou! If you’re like me, spring comes with one of your favorite holidays: St. Patrick’s Day! March 17, or St. Patrick’s Day, is a great day to have fun with your friends and blow off some of that mid-semester steam. It doesn’t matter if you’re celebrating by chilling alone or by going out with friends — it’s a great opportunity to sprinkle a little green into your everyday attire. St. Patrick’s Day outfits can be hard to find inspiration for, however, so on this edition of Ask a Fashion Student, I’ll be giving you some outfits to bring some luck of the Irish your way!
If you’re spending your day outside, create an outfit that is great for all types of that unpredictable March weather. An easy option is a basic green top with jeans. There are plenty of green tops to choose from that aren’t just boring T-shirts. A ribbed tank or bodysuit are always classics to pick from. If you want to spice it up, wear a tee or mesh top with a loud green pattern on it! If you want to imitate a four-leaf clover, throw on a green floral top. While I suggest a top with long sleeves so you can easily adjust to thein the weather, wear what makes you comfortable — especially pants — if you’re planning on moving around a lot. St. Patrick’s Day is known for its rowdy parades and outdoor celebrations, so I would also wear shoes that you don’t mind getting a little dirty!
If you want to go all out for St. Patrick’s day, color blocking is your friend. It can be hard to match different shades of green, so create an illusion of cohesion by throwing some white or black into your ensemble. Wearing a green dress with some black boots and a bag can break up your look so it’s not too costumey. Throwing on a white belt and adding white sneakers will bring more dimension to your look. Dresses are also a great way to create a monochromatic outfit for St. Patrick’s Day. If you really want to go the extra mile, I would search for some cute St. Patrick’s Day accessories at nearby thrift shops. Green headbands, purses or jewelry will fit perfectly, and anything with a four-leaf clover on it is a plus. Even a “Kiss Me I’m Irish” pin can make your outfit go the extra mile.
If you have something you need to dress professionally for, like an internship, but you still want to bring some subtle greenery into your outfit, focus on accessories. This way, you don’t have to worry about looking unprofessional or drawing too much attention to yourself. A neutral outfit with a green bracelet or earrings can allow you to celebrate the holiday in a much more subtle way. Something as simple as wearing green socks or green hair ties can add a little extra oomph to your St. Patrick’s Day outfit.
I hope these tips come in handy when picking your outfit for the luckiest day of the year! Have a great St. Patrick’s Day MU!
Remember: wear some green, avoid getting pinched and stay safe!
