Missouri women’s soccer proved they can succeed away from home, defeating Creighton despite a slow start
Missouri women’s soccer improved its record to 2-0 after a 3-1 comeback victory on the road against the Creighton Bluejays.
Creighton struck first, scoring a goal in the first 30 seconds of the match. Following this, Missouri shut down the Creighton offense, not allowing another shot for the rest of the half.
The Tigers responded with a goal from sophomore forward Kylee Simmons in the 9th minute. The score counted as Simmons’ second of the season after scoring in Missouri’s home opener against Southeast Missouri State.
With the game at a standstill less than two minutes before halftime, sophomore forward Mallory McGuire broke the tie with the game-winning goal off an assist from sophomore midfielder Elena Zuchowski. McGuire is in her first year with Missouri, after transferring from Rutgers where she scored one goal during her freshman year.
Missouri was in control most of the second half, with 12 shots compared to two for Creighton. This pressure resulted in another goal for Simmons — her third of the season and second of the game. The score was assisted by Zuchowski — her second of the game and season.
Following the game, Zuchowski had praise for Simmons.
“I’m so excited to see her get some goals, we need a forward that will score a lot. She’s got a lot of goals on the year now so it’s a good start,” Zuchowski said in an interview with Mizzou soccer.
The 3-1 win marked the Tigers’ first road win in nearly two seasons, the last one being on Oct. 10, 2021, against Florida.
Missouri’s underclassmen continue to contribute offensively, with all six points coming from sophomores.
The Tigers return home for their next game against the University of Omaha on Aug. 24 at 7 p.m.
