MU women’s volleyball started a weekend tournament off with a sweep against Northern Kentucky
Coming off of a tight 3-2 win versus Colgate on August 27th, the Missouri volleyball team faced Northern Kentucky and got their first sweep of the season, remaining undefeated.
Northern Kentucky started out hot, but the Tigers rallied and scored five unanswered points to take an 11-8 lead. After that, Missouri held a comfortable lead, even after the Norse tried to come back multiple times. MU ended up winning the set, 25-21.
The second set was all Tigers. This time around, it was Missouri who came out of the gates firing, as they led 15-5 thanks to contributions by junior setter Jordan Iliff, freshman setter Sierra Dudley and graduate student hitter Dilari Gedikoglu. Northern Kentucky cut into Missouri’s lead ever so slightly, but MU coasted to a 25-14 second-set victory.
The third set saw the Tigers slow down a bit. Throughout the game, Missouri racked up a total of eleven service errors, which helped Northern Kentucky out a lot as they had a lead throughout most of the set. Despite the slow start, Missouri found a rhythm and took control, winning the game 25-21 due primarily to efforts from Gedikoglu, Iliff and sophomore Janet DeMarris.
DeMarris was Missouri’s player of the game. It took her a little bit to get warmed up, but she finished with a career-high of eleven kills. Along with DeMarris, Iliff had an impressive match with ten kills, two assists and a block.
