Tigers struggle to score despite wide lead in shot attempts
Missouri soccer failed to mount a comeback in a 2-1 loss to Miami on Thursday in Coral Gables, Florida.
The Tigers fell behind early, facing a 2-0 deficit through the first 60 minutes before showing signs of offensive life to wrap up the match. Missouri got on the board in the 69th minute after a crosser from freshman forward Emily Derucki to fellow freshman Landis Canada, who headed it into the bottom of the net. This was Canada’s first career collegiate goal as a Tiger. Canada led the Tigers in both shots and shots on goal in a breakout game where she played the whole match.
The game was in an offensive stalemate through the first 30 minutes, with the Tigers taking a lone shot on the goal.
Miami Hurricanes freshman forward Giovana Canali broke through Missouri’s defenders and scored the inaugural goal in the 39th minute. Canali starred for the Hurricanes with her second goal of the season on her only shot attempt. The score remained 1-0 going into the half.
The 2-0 hole was made in the 49th minute off of an own goal — a cross from Miami’s Tori Grambo bounced off Missouri defender Shania Spriggs and into the net.
The Tigers gained some much needed momentum deeper into the second half. They generated seven shots in the second half, ultimately having twice as many shots than Miami, despite the final score.
Missouri continued to show a sense of urgency, but were unable to secure a tying goal before time expired.
The Tigers fall to 1-3-1 as they look to get back on track at home against Southeast Missouri State on Sunday, Sep. 8th at 7 p.m. at Audrey J. Walton Stadium.
