Missouri beats Florida on senior night to earn their first conference win in over a year
Missouri (3-6-2, 1-2-1 SEC) defeated Florida (3-3-5, 0-2-1 SEC) with a 2-0 win on senior night. With the win, the Tigers break their streak of SEC games without a win and move into a tie for 10th place in the league.
The Tigers started the game with two goals in the first eight minutes. Midfielder Olivia Chianelli had the first goal in the 5th minute off a corner kick. Senior midfielder Milena Fischer took the corner and sent it on net where Chianelli corralled the ball and tapped it into the bottom left part of the goal. This was Chianelli’s first goal of the 2024 campaign, and the second of her career at Missouri.
“I saw that the goalie was kind of coming out, and I knew if I stepped around her, that I could just get that one touch and be right behind her,” Olivia Chianelli said. “Feels great; great to get that done.”
Junior forward Kylee Simmons followed up Chianelli’s goal with one of her own in the 8th minute. Again, Fischer took the corner kick and passed it in Chianelli’s direction, resulting in a foul on Florida goalkeeper Alexa Goldberg. This gave Simmons a penalty kick, who knocked it into the top left corner for the Tigers’ second and final goal of the game.
Kate Phillips made her fourth straight start in net for Bella Hollenbach. Phillips stood strong against the Gators, making nine saves including three where she dove in front of the ball and the attacker. She allowed zero goals while playing 90 minutes.
Missouri’s offense looked smooth with a variety of attacks throughout the game. The Tigers took seven shots, scoring on two of them. Missouri took four corners in the game, with both goals resulting from a corner.
The Tigers held pregame festivities to honor each of the seniors on the 2024 team. They honored seven seniors, including five that were originally recruited to the program.
Missouri soccer will now travel to Knoxville, TN. for a match with the University of Tennessee Volunteers. The match will take place at 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 4.
