Missouri soccer drops another SEC matchup, falls to Tennessee 1-0
Missouri soccer traveled to Knoxville, Tennessee for a match with the Tennessee Volunteers, where the home team prevailed 1-0. With the loss, the Tigers fall to 3-7-2 (1-3-1 SEC), while the Volunteers improve to 7-1-3 (2-0-2 SEC).
The game was a low-scoring affair, but Tennessee scored an early goal in the 20th minute. Tennessee earned a corner kick and sent the ball toward the net where Missouri defender Callaway Combs attempted to clear it. However, she was unsuccessful and a scuffle ensued that ended with the ball in the back of the net courtesy of Jaida Thomas. The senior was credited with the 40th goal of her career.
The Volunteers controlled possession throughout the game, taking eight corners, while Missouri only took one. Missouri had plenty of chances as the teams were even with seven shots for each. The Tigers led the Volunteers in shots-on-goal with three to Tennessee’s one.
Freshman Emily Derucki secured possession outside the box in the ninth minute and directed the ball towards the net, but it was turned away by a Volunteer defender. Derucki had another chance in the 51st minute, dribbling up the left side of the pitch and pushing it past the Tennessee defender. However, Tennessee goalkeeper Ally Zazzara cleaned it up to turn Derucki away for the second time.
The Tigers had a chance to even the score in the 31st minute with midfielder Leah Selm slicing through defenders to find an open look at the net, but Zazzara made the save. The Volunteers held onto the lead, limiting the Tigers to minimal chances in the rest of the match.
Kate Phillips started in her fifth consecutive game for the Tigers, subbing in the net for Bella Hollenbach. Phillips allowed only one goal and faced seven shots. She played the full 90 minutes but recorded no saves as Tennessee only registered one shot on goal.
Missouri has a few days off while preparing for their next match against Ole Miss 5-9 (0-5 SEC). The Tigers will face the Rebels at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 10 in Columbia.
