Missouri soccer kicked off Homecoming weekend by beating Oklahoma 3-1 on Oct. 18. With the win, Missouri improves to 5-8-2 (3-4-1 SEC), while the Sooners fall to 8-7-1 (1-6-1 SEC). Missouri jumps Tennessee in the SEC standings and moves up to a tie with Kentucky and Texas A&M for 8th place.
Senior Leah Selm started the scoring by marking her name in the Missouri program record book. Selm scored 37 seconds after the opening whistle, marking the 3rd fastest goal in program history. She collected a pass from Brianna Buels, and dribbled into the box, rocketing the ball past Oklahoma goalkeeper Caroline Duffy.
Selm continued to be a strong offensive presence, taking each of the Tigers’ first three shots. The rest of the offense attempted to rally around their captain, but only took one more shot in the first half. Missouri almost scored at the end of the first half with Keegan Good getting a last-second shot off right before the buzzer, but was ruled offside.
Oklahoma controlled the ball for most of the first half, taking nine shots but was unable to score. Both teams were even in the first half with three corners, but Missouri registered more in the game with nine to Oklahoma’s seven.
Missouri’s defense allowed 13 shots but only one goal coming on a penalty kick. Sophomore Kate Phillips started in net for the Tigers allowing one goal while making four saves.
Good followed up her first half chance with a goal in the 50th minute to double the Tigers’ lead. Already with a goal in the game, Selm wasn’t done putting up points. She fought off defenders before finding Good open at the top of the box, who then fired a shot into the top of the net.
Selm then added to her game with her second goal of the game in the 59th minute. The senior captain totalled five points on the night, while contributing on all three goals.
Oklahoma responded with a goal of their own off a penalty kick in the 66th minute. Senior Leonie Weber was fouled in the box and was awarded a penalty kick, kicking past Phillips for the Sooners’ first goal of the game. Both teams were held scoreless during the final 24 minutes to keep the score set at 3-1.
Missouri soccer’s next game is on the road against Texas, who looks to preserve its unbeaten 8-0-2 record at home. That game is at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 24 at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
