The Chiefs improve to 6-0 after a victory over the 49ers
The Kansas City Chiefs remain the last undefeated team left in the NFL this season after a 28-18 victory over the San Francisco 49ers in a rematch of last year’s Super Bowl. Here are four takeaways from the Chiefs’ week seven victory.
Defensive domination
The Chiefs’ defense shined yet again with their run defense. While the Chiefs came into this game ranked No. 5 in rushing yards allowed and No. 6 in points allowed, they also sat at No. 20 in passing yards allowed.
The Chiefs turned this around against the 49ers, allowing just over 200 yards. The Chiefs frustrated San Francisco’s quarterback Brock Purdy, holding him to a 55% completion percentage and picking off Purdy three times. This led directly to Kansas City points, with 14 points scored off those turnovers.
The Chiefs held down the rushing game by limiting 49ers running back Jordan Mason to 58 yards on the ground.
Offensive output
With the injury to Chiefs starting running back Isiah Pacheco two weeks ago, some predicted that the rushing attack would take a step back. However, this has not happened with the return of running back Kareem Hunt, who was signed back in September. Against San Francisco, Hunt accumulated 78 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes scrambled for 39 yards and a game-changing touchdown.
While Kansas City excelled on the ground, the passing game still struggled. Mahomes threw two interceptions with no touchdowns plus 154 yards. Tight end Noah Gray led all receivers with 66 yards on four receptions.
The injury bug
Both teams entered the game with major injuries, mainly to the receiving cores. The Chiefs played without their top two wide receivers, Rashee Rice and Marquise Brown. This injury bug spread quickly with a re-aggravated hamstring injury to wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster early in the first quarter.
On the 49ers side, wide receiver Jauan Jennings was already ruled out coming into the game. Then, Deebo Samuel Sr. left in the first quarter due to an apparent sickness. Later on in the second quarter, No. 1 wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk came out due to what was later revealed to be a torn ACL and MCL.
All of these receiving injuries came in on top of the injury to running back Christian McCaffrey before the season began.
As a result tight end George Kittle shouldered the load with six receptions for 92 yards. Wide receiver Jacob Cowing helped out with two big receptions for 50 yards.
Next Week
The Chiefs will travel to take on the division rival Las Vegas Raiders at 3:35 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 27.
