Missouri soccer loses final road test of the season, now needs a win or a tie in the last game to qualify for the SEC tournament
Missouri soccer traveled to Austin, Texas on Oct. 24 for a conference matchup with the Texas Longhorns, losing 3-1. Missouri fell to 5-9-2 (3-5-1 SEC), while Texas moved to 12-3-2 (5-3-1 SEC) for the year.
Missouri started quickly, taking three shots in the first 10 minutes. Midfielder Keegan Good drew first blood with a goal in the 10th minute. Forward Brianna Buels dribbled the ball up the right side and threw it into the box where a Texas defender promptly headed it out. However, the ball went straight to Good who rocketed it past Longhorn goalkeeper Mia Justus.
Missouri played good defense in the first half, allowing 10 shots but only three on-net. Goalie Kate Phillips shined in the first half, making three saves and allowing zero first-half goals. She helped the Tigers take a 1-0 lead into halftime.
Texas wasted no time evening the score in the second half, scoring less than 90 seconds after the half started. Senior midfielder Lexi Missimo dribbled up the middle past Missouri defenders before placing a shot on-net. The ball sailed past Phillips, evening the score 1-1.
Senior Jilly Shimkin scored Texas’s second goal of the night in the 65th minute. It was in a similar fashion to Missimo’s goal, with Shimkin dribbling up the middle of the field and shooting it across her body toward the bottom left part of the net. Phillips dove to make the save, but the ball went past her outstretched arms. Amalia Villarreal then extended the Longhorn’s lead to 3-1 with a goal in the 85th minute after a long pass from Justus in-net.
Both offenses lit up the stat sheet, totaling 28 shots and 13 corners between the two teams. Texas held the edge in shots 17-11. Missouri won the corner kick battle 7-6 but did not score any goals off those setpieces.
Missouri’s next game is against LSU at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 27, at home. This is the Tigers’ final game of the season before the SEC tournament begins on Nov. 3. Only 12 teams qualify for the tournament and the Tigers currently sit on the edge in 10th place. To make their first SEC Tournament in a full season since 2018, Missouri will need to tie or win against LSU.
