Missouri and Purdue swimmers dive into the water during the 200-meter freestyle on Friday, Oct. 25, 2024 at the Mizzou Aquatic Center in Columbia.
Jan Zubik’s pair of B-cuts highlight Tiger performers
Missouri swimming and diving teamed up for the first time this season to host the Purdue Boilermakers. Both the men’s and women’s team came up short, as the men lost 151-149 while the women lost 161-139. This loss now puts the men at an 0-1 record for the 2024-25 season and the women at 1-1.
Despite both teams falling short there were still victories to take away from individual performances.
Junior Jan Zubik earned two NCAA Championship B-cuts. His times of 1:47.20 in the 200 yard backstroke and 1:44.46 in the 200 yard butterfly were enough for first place finishes in both events. A B-cut gives Zubik a high chance at competing at the NCAA D1 Championships at the end of this season. The Tigers have already earned six B-cuts this season.
Senior Grant Bochenski won another event for the men, finishing with a time of 48.99 in the 100 yard backstroke.
The men both won relays during the meet, sweeping the Boilermakers. The men’s 200 yard medley relay featured Bochenski, Logan Ottke, Jaden Pospishil and Luke Nebrich. They blew by the competition, hitting the wall at 1:27.76.
The last victorious relay was the men’s 400 yard freestyle relay. This team included Phillipp Peschke, Bochenski, Nebrich and Francois Malherbe. They earned a narrow first place finish with a time of 2:56.18. The second place team from Purdue finished one second behind.
Collier Dyer secured a first place finish in the men’s 1 meter diving. He scored 356.03 points as the only Tiger in the top five for the event.
Lina Bank led the way on the women’s end in her three swimming events. A time of 1:02.43 in the 100 yard breaststroke combined with 2:16.92 in the 200 yard breaststroke brought home first place finishes in both events. She won both events during their last outing against Arkansas on the road. Bank was also the breaststroke leg on the first place women’s medley relay team for this meet.
Sophomore Zoe Schneider was the only woman to finish the 1000 yard freestyle in under 10 minutes. She boasted a time of 9:59.73, finishing eight seconds ahead of teammate Danielle Gleason.
Seniors Abbey Taute and Taylor Williams brought home first place finishes in their respective events. Taute was the only sub two-minute time in the 200 yard backstroke with a time of 1:59.31. Williams won the 200 yard butterfly by 0.4 seconds with a time of 2:01.28.
The women’s 200 yard medley relay finished first with a team composed of Sydney Bales, Bank, Grace Hanson and Francesca Smith. The quartet finished with a time of 1:40.89, less than a second ahead of the second-placed Purdue team.
As a whole the Tigers won 13 of the 32 total events, however Purdue picked up the overall win.
The Tigers will be back in action at the same time and same place next week as they host the Texas A&M Aggies at 10 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 1.
