
The Tigers secured a much-needed first win for its home opener
Missouri women’s basketball defeated Southern University on Thursday with a 66-51 final score.
Missouri took an early lead of 6-0 with layups from guard Ashton Judd and forward Laniah Randle. Southern was able to make two baskets but was unable to get around the Tigers defense.
Missouri then went on a 14-point scoring streak, a majority came from forward Angelique Ngalakulondi. The Tigers finished up the first quarter with a score of 21-4 and a buzzer three-pointer from guard Abbey Schreacke.
Schreake would open up the second quarter with another three pointer and Randle knocking one down as well. Southern upped its offensive fight and were able to catch up 28-18.
Despite Southern’s push back, Missouri was able to hold its own with all six seniors adding points to the scoreboard. The Tiger’s held onto a 31-22 lead in the second quarter.
Randle opened the third quarter with a layup and continued to be the Tigers main shooter throughout the quarter. Grace Slaughter knocked down two three-pointers, only boosting the Tigers score.
Nyah Wilson joined the three point scorers with a series of layups, before Schreacke wrapped up the quarter with a three point shot setting the score 51-33.
Tilda Sjökvist made her season debut with a layup at the beginning of the fourth quarter and Averi Kroenke would follow Sjökvist and make her first points of the season with a layup and a triple.
Randle wrapped up the game with a jumper, winning the Tiger’s first home game 66-51.
The Tiger’s played at the Mizzou Arena against Norfolk at 2pm on Sunday.
