Missouri Wrestling celebrates its third consecutive team title
The No.9 Missouri Tigers cleared the board at the Tiger Style Invite at Staley High School in Kansas City, Mo. The Tigers claimed the team championship with 168.5 points, a 25-point margin over second-place Purdue with 143.5.
The Tigers’ success was fueled by four wrestlers who captured titles in their respective weight classes. Keegan O’Toole at 174 pounds, Cam Steed at 165 pounds, Colton Hawks at 184 pounds and Josh Edmond at 141 pounds all claimed first place.
O’Toole, the defending NCAA champion, was particularly dominant. He won all four of his matches with technical fall including a 19-0 victory over Purdue’s Orlando Cruz. Steed also went undefeated, securing the 165-pound title with a first-period pin. He also had 17-5 and 21-5 wins against Little Rock’s Brendon Abdon and Austin Keal. Hawks impressed with a pinfall and a major decision, while Edmond won three matches, including a 19-3 technical fall over Purdue’s Christian White.
The Tigers’ depth was on full display, as 21 of the team’s 25 wrestlers secured podium spots, contributing to 25 bonus-point victories. At 125 pounds, Gage Walker earned a third-place finish, with a 15-0 win against Little Rock’s Tyson Roach and finishing 3-1 overall. Luqman Masud finished in sixth-place and Mack Mauger won 11-0 against Maryland’s Presden Sanchez, but was unable to place.
At 133 pounds, Jake Crapps placed third and Kade Moore finished fourth, going against each other resulting in a medical forfeit.
At 149 pounds, Logan Gioffre and Zeke Seltzer played each other resulting in a 1-0 decision by Gioffre. Gioffre came in second off a loss against Cal Poly’s Chance Lemer and Seltzer ended in third. At 285 pounds, Seth Nitzel earned second from an impressive 11-1 and 8-0 wins, but lost 5-2 in overtime to Maryland’s Seth Nevills.
While several wrestlers faced stiff competition, the Tigers showcased resilience throughout their roster. James Conway and Joel Mylin placed fourth and sixth, respectively, both at 157 pounds, while Logan Cole earned fifth at 174 pounds.
The Tigers look to extend their winning streak as they travel to Blacksburg, Va. to face No. 8 Virginia Tech on Nov. 15 at 6 p.m.
