
Strong performances from seniors and freshmen alike allowed the team to rally after its first loss
Missouri Tennis played three matches in Minneapolis, Minnesota Feb. 7-9.
On Friday, the team lost its first match of the season 2-5 against the University of Minnesota. Junior Andrea Artimedi and senior Mary Brumfield won 6-3 against Golden Gopher sophomores Yinong Ma and Anlin Xie on doubles court two to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Graduate student Lailaa Bashir and freshman addition Zoe Lazar also defeated sophomore Jeselle Ante and junior Aiva Schmitz 6-1 on doubles court three to extend the total lead to 2-0.
Freshman Gian Octa earned Missouri’s only singles win of the day, defeating opposing freshman Deniz Turan 6-4, 6-1 on court five. Freshman Korina Roso and Artimedi were defeated in their singles matches. Roso fell 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 and Artimedi 6-2, 5-7, 6-0.
Missouri began Sunday’s doubleheader with a win over Colorado State University despite each of the top three court singles matchups ending unfinished. Senior Inah Canete and Roso won 6-0 on doubles court one against graduate student Victoria Erechtchenko and senior Sarah Weekley. Lazar defeated CSU freshman Mariya Dobreva 6-1, 6-4 on singles court four, and Octa defeated sophomore Logan Voeks 6-4, 6-0, on court five.
Missouri’s day continued with a 7-0 sweep of the University of St. Thomas, highlighted by a Canete win against UST senior Marthe Degeorges on singles court one, 6-2, 7-6. Freshman Sarah Hartel also won her debut match for the Tigers, 7-5, 6-2, over freshman Ingrid Forsberg on singles court six.
Missouri finished Sunday’s matches with an 11-0 record, bringing the overall season record up to 5-1. The Tigers come back home to host Missouri State University at 11 a.m. and Southeast Missouri State University at 3 p.m. on Feb. 15.
