Missouri defeats Oklahoma for the first time since 2012 behind Mitchell’s 25 points
Coming off the heels of a week where the Tigers lost a pair of top-10 opponents, Missouri men’s basketball defeated Oklahoma 82-58. This was the first time the two faced off in SEC conference play in the 212th installment of the rivalry.
Missouri capped off the first half with a 13-3 run, extending its lead to 44-24. Junior Mark Mitchell scored 19 points and collected six rebounds in the first 20 minutes. Those 19 points helped Mitchell pass the 1,000-point mark in his collegiate career. Mitchell finished the night with a career-high 25 points behind 13 made free throws.
“Obviously, I knew I needed to be better,” Mitchell said. “Trying to be aggressive and battle on offense, defense, and do the little things the team needs.”
Anthony Robinson II scored double digits for the first time in six games with 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting. Robinson also had a positive impact defensively with one steal and one block.
Missouri junior guard-forward Mark Mitchell jumps to the basket to dunk the ball while Oklahoma senior forward Jalon Moore attempts to block the ball on Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2025 at Mizzou Arena in Columbia, Mo. Mitchell reached 1000 career points on Wednesday.
As a whole, the Missouri defense succeeded, forcing the Sooners into 17 turnovers. The Tigers turned those Oklahoma mistakes into 16 points.
Senior Caleb Grill got back on track with 15 points on 3-4 shooting on 3-pointers. This comes after a disappointing four-point performance against Texas A&M.
This game marked the third time Missouri head coach Dennis Gates matched up against his brother, Armon, an assistant coach for the Sooners.
“I’m so proud of him,” Dennis said. “I’m proud of what he’s been able to do … he will run a college program at some point.”
At 2:30 p.m, Saturday, Feb 15, Missouri went to Athens, Georgia to take on the Georgia Bulldogs.
