The student organization will host a blood drive with the American Red Cross and aims for high turnout
The University of Missouri’s Pre-Medical Society will be hosting a blood drive on Monday, Feb. 24. The drive will be held from noon – 5 p.m. in Stotler Lounge, located inside Memorial Union.
The student-run organization partnered with the American Red Cross to host the annual blood drive. There will be both whole blood and Power Red donations. Power Red donations allows donors to contribute two units of red blood cells with less physical impacts than whole blood donations. Those interested in donating blood can make an appointment through the American Red Cross website blood services page using the code “Mizzou.”
Kaitlyn Walters, president of the Pre-Medical Society, encourages donations from MU students and the public to fulfill the constant need for blood transfusions.
“A single donation of blood can save up to three lives, which is crazy to think about,” Walters said.
Walters also said the organization is hoping to see an increased number of donations and possibly a new record, with a goal to surpass last year’s donations of 39 units.
“Our goal this year is to donate 40 units of blood,” Walters said. “That would be the most we’ve ever donated as Pre-Medical Society.”
The Power Red option involves some additional eligibility requirements for age, height, weight and hemoglobin levels. It also involves the return of all blood components other than red blood cells, along with saline.
Walters said she recognizes that some people may be worried about the physical effects of donating blood. However, she encourages these individuals to consider the Power Red option, as it offers replenished hydration.
“If they’re worried about feeling sick or not feeling well after donating, then that’s also a really great alternative,” Walters said.
The Red Cross will also be offering all donors at events between Jan. 27 and Feb. 28 a $15 gift card to the donor’s merchant of choice via email as a reward for their donation. Walters said she hopes these incentives will lead to more participation.
