Kansas City won a pair of nail biters to reach Super Bowl before losing to Philadelphia 40-22
The Kansas City Chiefs had another historic 2024-2025 season, becoming the fourth team to reach three straight Super Bowls. To get there they defeated the Houston Texans and Buffalo Bills before falling to the Philadelphia Eagles on Feb. 9.
The Chiefs defeated the Texans for the second time in the postseason 23-14. The first time, Houston lost 27-19, as Tank Dell tore both his MCL and LCL.
In the second, Houston started off slow allowing a 63 yard return to Joe Mixon in the third quarter. Kansas City answered with a 10-0 run, as Patrick Mahomes found Travis Kelce for 11 yards, passing his second touchdown of the game.
Texans kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn missed his second field goal of the day late in the fourth and the Chiefs ran out the clock, taking an intentional safety to win the game 23-14. This marked the seventh straight AFC championship appearance for Kansas City.
The Chiefs would then take on a familiar foe in the Buffalo Bills for the fourth time in the last five years.
Kansas City looked to bury their opponents as a 3-yard Mahomes’ rushing touchdown gave the Chiefs a 21-10 lead late in the first half.
Buffalo marched down the field for a touchdown in 1:32. This cut the Bills’ deficit to five after a failed two-point conversion.
The teams traded blows in the second half, before Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen found wide receiver Curtis Samuel in the endzone to tie the game up at 29-29. This marked the first tie of the game since 0-0.
Kansas City looked to take the lead with a 1st and goal at the 10 with about four and a half minutes remaining. Then Buffalo stepped up, sacking Mahomes for 7 yards.
Kicker Harrison Butker nailed a 35-yard field goal to give Kansas City a 32-29 lead with under four minutes remaining. Now it was time for the defense to step up.
After forcing a 4th-and-5, Chiefs’ defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo schemed an unexpected blitz package. This forced a Buffalo incompletion, as Kansas City snagged the ball and ran out the clock.
The Chiefs entered the 59th Super Bowl with the goal of becoming the first ever team in NFL history to three-peat as Super Bowl champions.
Mahomes was rattled early, forced out of the pocket and picked off by cornerback Cooper DeJean for a touchdown. This gave Philadelphia an early 17-0 lead. Mahomes was pressured 16 times during the game.
Things continued to spiral, as Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts found wide receiver DeVonta Smith for a 46-yard touchdown to go up 34-0.
The Chiefs picked up as Mahomes threw three touchdowns, completing 15-18 passes for 224 yards. This came in contrast to the 6-14 passing performance for 33 yards and two interceptions in the first half.
In the end, it was all window dressing, as Kansas City lost 40-22 in Super Bowl 59.
The Chiefs rewrote the record books as Kelce set a new NFL record for most career Super Bowl receptions with 35-yards. He surpassed the previous record of 33-yards by wide receiver Jerry Rice.
Kansas City finished the regular season 15-2 and has now represented the AFC in the Super Bowl five of the last six seasons.
