The Tigers made a comeback against A&M for their second conference win
The Missouri Tigers toppled the Texas A&M Aggies on Sunday with a final score of 69-59.
The Tigers started off the game strong and fought A&M for the early lead. Sophomore guard Grace Slaughter scored a jumper, giving the Tigers a lead of 6-3. Junior guard Ashton Judd scored the first three-pointer of the game, setting the score 9-5.
A&M caught up, tying the score 11-11, but guard Abbey Schreacke made a three-point jumper and a free throw, giving the Tigers the lead once again at 15-12.
The Aggies put up a strong offensive possession, however, and caught up once again 15-14. A&M would conclude the first quarter with the lead at 16-15.
The Tigers fought hard in the first two minutes of the second quarter, but A&M was not willing to give up the lead as they continued to run a quick offense for a 22-17 lead.
Missouri strengthened its defense swiftly during the media break and prevented points on the scoreboard for two minutes.
However, the Aggies still got around them and held onto the lead 26-17. After a 30-second timeout, Slaughter immediately took control of the ball, scoring six points and bringing the score to 26-24.
Judd finally tied up the score 26-26 with two free throws. Neither team broke the tie until Slaughter ended the silence with two free throws, giving the Tigers a 28-26 lead.
A&M quickly re-tied the score 31-31, wrapping up the first half of the game.
When the teams came back after halftime, they both brought fire. They traded baskets, until a three point jumper from Schreacke gave the Tigers the lead at 39-35.
Point guard De’Myla Brown continued the offensive surge, making a layup and free throw and bringing the score 42-37.
Judd and Slaughter closed out the quarter with a three-point jumper each and free throws for a Tiger lead of 55-43. Missouri was not willing to give up its lead so easily this time around as the team’s defense significantly improved.
Slaughter would only keep the heat on, starting the fourth quarter with two free throws for a 57-43 lead. Brown and Schreacke continued the streak of scoring three-pointers, both scoring one.
The Tiger’s defense kept A&M from finding many openings to score and held them off until the end of the game with a final score of 69-59.
Slaughter was the top scorer, making 29 points with four rebounds. Judd was the top defender with eight rebounds and nine points.
The Tigers went back home to play Oklahoma on Feb. 16 at 1 p.m. at the Mizzou Arena.
