The event had Asian cuisine attendees could choose from and enjoy
The University of Missouri Campus Activities Programming Board hosted Culture and Cuisine: Lunar New Year in the MU Student Center on Feb. 25 from 4-6 p.m. to celebrate the Lunar New Year.
The celebration was co-hosted with the Vietnamese Student Association for the second year in a row. Attendees were met with tables of free food, which included dishes such as lo mein noodles, orange chicken, dumplings, crab rangoons and egg rolls. VSA also had a table with candy and a poster with pictures of members from their organization.
“I think it’s super important to have events like this because food is one of the best ways to share culture,” VSA President Vy Vu said.
Vu recognized the collaboration efforts that CAPB offered such as allowing VSA the opportunity to designate a caterer and plan the activity. Meanwhile, CAPB dealt with the logistics like supplying funds for the event and contributed to the planning and staffing.
“For the most part, our CAPB’s funding is student affair dollars and student activity fee,” said Farheen Khan, CAPB community and belonging programming chair. “We like to host events like this, and Lunar New Year is one of the ones that are a fan-favorite. We want to make sure everyone feels included and like they belong, so it’s important for us to celebrate the different perspectives that… make up Mizzou.”
Samuel Kim, a member of the Asian American Association, was in attendance at the event in support of AAA.
“My favorite food that I ate today was the noodles,” Kim said. “I don’t think you can go wrong with the noodles, and it had a really good flavor to it.”
CAPB helps host many cultural events alongside affinity-based organizations across campus. One event that they will be hosting is the Global Bazaar on April 11 from 6-8 p.m., which includes multiple organizations that set up foods and drinks from around the world in a street-vendor style.
