Strong hitters and fast pitches assisted the Tigers at the invite
The Tigers wrapped up the Shocker Invitational March 2nd in Wichita, Kansas. The team went through many ups and downs and walked away with three wins and two losses.
Oklahoma State 4, Missouri 3
Missouri started the first inning with a 2-0 lead and earned another run in the third inning with a home run from sophomore infielder Madison Walker.
However, the No. 15 Cowgirls responded with three runs in the fifth inning. They secured the win with a bunt in the seventh inning to clinch the final run.
Sophomore pitcher Marissa McCann pitched the whole game, notching her fourth complete game of the season. She allowed four runs and two walks in the entirety of the game.
Missouri 10, Wichita State 1
The Tigers took their first win of the invitational against Wichita State. Missouri got one run in the third inning off a homer from junior infielder Kayley Lenger. Senior infielder Julia Crenshaw and sophomore outfielder Claire Cahalan got consecutive RBI base-loaded walks, raking in six runs in the fourth inning.
Missouri got another run in the fifth inning. An RBI single from Cahalan and a double from freshman infielder Madison Uptegrove in the seventh inning capped the score 10-1, a win for the Tigers.
Junior pitcher Cierra Harrison pitched for six innings, allowing one run. Junior pitcher Taylor Pannell took over in the seventh, allowing zero runs on zero hits.
Missouri 10, South Dakota State 1
The Tigers notched their second win of the tournament against South Dakota State 10-1. Missouri scored its first run in the second inning off a home run from Walker. Her streak continued in the third inning when she belted her seventh home run of the season.
Senior infielder Taylor Ebbs followed Walker’s lead and hit a two-run homer to the right, bringing the score to 5-0. Senior third baseman Kara Daly hit an RBI bases-loaded walk, followed by a three RBI double from Walker in the fourth inning, bringing the score to 9-0.
Junior outfielder Haidyn Sokoloski added an RBI bases-loaded walk in the fifth inning, giving the Tigers a 10-0 advantage. The Jackrabbits only scored one run, and Missouri took the win.
Pannell once again pitched all five innings for the second time this season.
Missouri 7, Nebraska 1
The Tigers kept bringing in the wins as they took down No. 16 Nebraska 7-1. The first three innings started out slow, but things picked up in the fourth inning with a six-run fourth frame. Sokoloski, Walker and Crenshaw all got RBI, contributing to the 6-0 lead.
Nebraska scored one run, only for Missouri to respond with another run off a field error in the fifth inning. McCann once again pitched all seven innings, allowing one earned run and totaling three strikeouts.
Nebraska 10, Missouri 9
Missouri faced off against Nebraska once again, but this time, Nebraska welcomed Missouri’s second loss. The Tigers scored three runs in the first inning from a two-run homer courtesy of Walker. Nebraska caught up in the second inning with five runs, putting them ahead of the Tigers 5-3.
Walker came back in the fifth inning with the first grand slam of her career, tying up the score 8-8. Nebraska took advantage of sacrifice flies in the sixth to gain two more runs, putting them ahead of Missouri 10-8.
Crenshaw hit a season-best fourth home run of the day in the bottom of the sixth, fixing the final score 10-9. Harrison pitched the first two innings until McCann subbed in for her.
The Tigers will be on the road to face No. 24 Kentucky at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, March 7 in Lexington, Kentucky.
