The Tigers remain winless in the 2024-25 season, while Paz records his second top-10 finish of the year
Missouri men’s golf finished No. 11 in the Colleton River Collegiate in South Carolina after a less-than-stellar day two saw the Tigers drop five spots on the leaderboard.
Coming off another No. 11 finish at the John A. Burns Collegiate Intercollegiate on Feb. 15, the Tigers were looking to push for the top five after a strong day one headlined by junior Virgilio Paz. Paz shot two under par with scores of 70 and 72 in 36 holes of action, good for fifth place heading into the final round on day two.
As a team, the Tigers were sixth out of sixteen schools heading into day two with a combined score of 17-over-par. Unfortunately for Missouri, the team didn’t see the same success on March 3. Paz shot four over par in his final round, dropping to eighth place in the tournament, where he would finish.
Graduate student Mattias Varjun, who shot scores of 73, 72 and 80, was No. 11 heading into the final round. He shot 8-over-par in the last 18 holes, dropping 24 spots on the leaderboard to finish at No. 35.
First-year Trent Mierl shot scores of 76, 78, and 74 and finished with the top round of the day for Missouri, shooting 4-over-par and placing No. 49 overall. Sophomores Veikka Viskari, who shot 78, 76 and 76 and Brock Snyder, who shot 76, 80 and 77 placed No. 52 and No. 63, respectively.
These combined efforts amounted to a No. 11 finish for Missouri, shooting 32-over-par as a team. Michigan State placed first in the tournament to earn their first win of the season.
Paz earned his third-ever collegiate top-10 finish in the tournament, leading the team in ranking over the weekend and remaining the only member to post multiple top-ten finishes. Paz also remains the only individual to win a tournament, which he accomplished back in September at the Put Me In Coach Invitational.
The Tigers will continue looking for their first win of the season on March 16 as they head to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina to play at the General Hacker Invitational.
