The Tigers have three players place in the top 20 and shoot 21-under par led by a career round from Trent Mierl
Freshman Trent Mierl led the way with another big weekend at the Hootie at Bulls Bay tournament, finishing No. 7. Mierl led the Tigers on the scoreboard for his second straight tournament and helped Missouri to a No. 5 finish. He shot a 69 in his opening round, placing him at No. 13 after day one.
Mierl only shot one over par in the second round, leading the rookie to drop down the leaderboard in a stacked field of athletes. However, he ended his tournament with a bang. He placed in No. 23 heading into his third and final round and shot a career-best score of 65, jumping 16 spots to place No. 7 overall. A tournament score of nine-under par was the best of Mierl’s young career, along with his fifth top-20 finish of the season. Posting a top-15 mark in his last two tournaments, it’s safe to say the freshman is trending in the right direction as the season nears a close.
Mierl was joined in the top 20 by sophomore Veikka Viskari and graduate student Mattias Varjun, who both tied for No. 18 in the tournament despite both shooting under par overall. Viskari, who sat as high as No. 13 at one point, shot scores of 71, 69 and 71 while Varjun shot scores of 71, 70 and 70, sitting as high as No. 16 before joining Viskari in 18th place. This event marked Varjun’s highest placing tournament of the season and Viskari’s second finish within the top 20.
Senior Trevor Mierl, brother of Trent Mierl, was next to place for the Tigers, finishing No. 27. After shooting 72 and 73 on the first two days, Trevor Mierl shot a 68 in his final round, recording five straight birdies and tying his season-best score.
Junior Virgilio Paz placed No. 35 for Missouri, finishing under par with scores of 72, 71 and 71. Sophomore Brock Snyder brought up the rear for the Tigers, shooting scores of 75, 76 and 74 to finish No. 78 overall.
The Purdue Boilermakers took home first place in the tournament, shooting 30-under par and took home the victory after a playoff with South Carolina.
As a team, Missouri finished 21-under par with a team score of 843, its best of the 2024-25 season. The No. 5 finish marked the second-highest placing of the season for the Tigers, the first coming in September of 2024 when they placed No. 2 at the Canadian Collegiate Invitational.
The Tigers look to defend their territory in Columbia as they host the Tiger Intercollegiate on April 7 at the Club at Old Hawthorne.
