Despite a rough season to this point, Missouri looked to pick up a meaningful rivalry victory over the Kansas Jayhawks. They could not achieve this goal however, falling 9-3.
After Missouri’s sophomore outfielder Kaden Peer got things started with his fifth home run of the season, Kansas took control of the game in commanding fashion with four runs in the first two innings, resulting in a 4-1 lead for the Jayhawks. However, Missouri fought back with another run in the third inning to make the score 4-2.
Kansas pulled ahead slightly in the fourth inning with two more runs as the Missouri bats went cold for the next three innings. Missouri narrowed the gap however, tacking on a run in the seventh to make it 6-3.
Missouri’s relief pitching held it together after a strugglesome start from junior pitcher Josh Kirchhoff, who allowed four hits and three earned runs through just one inning. However, a familiar sight was yet again observed by Missouri when its relief pitching began to give. Kansas earned three more runs through the seventh and eighth, propelling them to a 9-3 win in the long-time rivalry matchup.
This game saw a combined 13 pitchers from both teams, with only two of Missouri’s six total pitchers not allowing a run. Of Kansas’ seven pitchers, zero pitchers allowed more than one run.
While the pitching was a let down, the hitting offered some bright spots as junior infielder Jackson Lovich continued to have a strong season, going 2-for-3 at the plate with a run. Peer also stood out, going 2-for-5 at the plate with a home run, two RBIs and a run.
