Missouri women’s soccer was defeated 2-1 in its second leg of a three-game road trip as the Tigers of Missouri went to play the No. 15-ranked Tigers of Memphis. Memphis came into the game on a red-hot 4-0 start to the year, including a 1-0 victory against Vanderbilt, who was ranked No. 11 at the time. Missouri suffered a loss its last time out on the road at Saint Louis 1-0.
The opening goal of the match was a powerful one from Memphis’ freshman forward Ellis Kelly. The goal came in the 25th minute after sophomore forward Elise Perron made a decisive forward run, leading to a pass across the box for her teammate. The goal from Kelly made it her fifth goal in the same amount of games, with eight total goal involvements on the year, leading her conference.
Missouri leveled the game after junior defender Mia Yang scored a header from 10 yards out following a free kick. This was Yang’s first career goal for the Tigers. While senior midfielder Hailey Chambliss won the free kick, it was sophomore midfielder Landis Canada who delivered the ball to Yang.
After 29 minutes of a 1-1 score, it was Memphis’ sophomore midfielder Ai Kitagawa who knocked the ball into the bottom left corner. The goal came in the 71st minute and was the final score in the affair.
Although Missouri could not hold on, its offense kept it close with Memphis, with the Tigers only having four fewer shots than Memphis and two fewer shots on goal.
Following the defeat, Missouri moved to 1-2-1 and wrapped up their road trip on Sunday, Aug. 31 in Springfield as they took on an in-state opponent, Missouri State.
