Missouri Soccer defeated the Kansas City Roos 1-0 on Sept. 7 at Audrey J. Walton Stadium, closing out its non-conference schedule with a narrow victory.
The Tigers struck first, with junior defender Mia Yang finishing a corner from sophomore forward Emily Derucki in the third minute of play, giving Missouri a 1-0 lead on the match’s first shot.
“She always has such quality services,” Yang said about Derucki. “I was glad I could get that one in the back of the net, especially so early on.”
The assist was Derucki’s team-leading fourth of the season.
Missouri racked up 12 corners during the match, with seven coming in the first half alone. This total surpassed the season-high of six corners set against Missouri State a week prior. Yang proved to be the biggest threat in the match, finishing with four shots, including a team-high three on target, as she scored her second goal of the year.
Despite attempting 19 total shots, only seven landed on target for the Tigers. Head Coach Stefanie Golan was adamant about the team’s need to sharpen its finishing in the attacking third.
“We have to be grittier in the box,” Golan said. “We have to be better with the looks we’re getting. We have to be able to show how bad we want to win.”
This contest marked the first match of the season where the Tigers committed fewer fouls than their opponents. Missouri finished with eight infractions while the Roos totaled 12.
The Tigers are hopeful for the return of senior midfielder Hailey Chambliss and sophomore midfielder Landis Canada, who both missed the match despite being key contributors this season.
“We’re taking it day by day,” Golan said on their status.
With the win, Missouri improved to 3-3-1 on the season. The Tigers will begin SEC play Friday, Sept. 12, against Texas (2-4-1) at Audrey J. Walton Stadium.
