Missouri Homecoming Steering Committee and Homecoming Royalty Top 10 members sing along to “Old Missouri” after the football game against Massachusetts on Saturday, Sept. 27, at Faurot Field in Columbia, Mo. The Missouri Homecoming Steering Committee is made up of 38 student leaders who organize the homecoming events leading up to the football game.
There’s a lot more to football game days than just the game. Hundreds of volunteers and staff work around Memorial Stadium before, during and after the game to put on a successful event for thousands of fans. From checking bags and scanning tickets at the entrance gates to managing concessions, media and gameday operations in the stands and on the sidelines, the details at Faurot Field are carefully managed to create the electric atmosphere that makes game day in Columbia unforgettable.
For some fans, the Missouri Tigers’ 42-6 victory against Massachusetts on Saturday, Sept. 27, was the highlight of the weekend. But the Tigers’ win was only one piece of the full game day experience in Columbia. Tailgaters lined the parking lots around campus, the sounds of Marching Mizzou at Tiger Walk echoed in the air and fans packed the stands hours before kickoff. These elements, combined with the roar of the gold-out crowd, make Mizzou football more than just a game, they make game day a community tradition.
The history of this weekend’s game was also rooted in tradition. It marked the end of three weeks of Homecoming events, hosted by members of the Homecoming Steering Committee. Mizzou students across campus spent months working behind the scenes to prepare these traditions. From Decorate the District and campus decorations to the blood drive and parade, the history of Mizzou’s self-proclaimed largest student-run homecoming in the nation was clear. For alumni, students, community members and others, the game was the grand finale of a yearly celebration that dates over 110 years.
This collection of photos highlights more than just the action on the field, but also the spirit, energy and dedication that is apparent across Faurot Field every game day. From the gates to the sidelines, game day is about more than football, it’s about the people who make it possible. This weekend was no exception, as Mizzou celebrated the first and finest Homecoming tradition in the nation.
