Another Missouri Soccer game was decided before the halftime whistle, as the Tigers fell 2-0 to No. 24 Vanderbilt on Oct. 10. Both Commodores goals came within the first 20 minutes of the game.
The Commodores broke the ice after just 12 minutes of play. Exploiting the open space in the Missouri backline, junior midfielder Courtney Jones took a curling shot that nestled the ball into the top right corner of the goal, knocking the Tigers down early.
Jones found the net again eight minutes later. The Commodores had been hammering the Tigers down the right flank and eventually broke through with a cross from freshman midfielder Olivia Stafford, the reigning SEC freshman of the week, who found the foot of Jones for a clinical finish.
The Tigers’ offense struggled to get going. Missouri was outshot 19-5, with only one on-target shot. During the second half, the Tigers only produced one shot.
On the other side of the ball, Kate Phillips continues to impress between the posts. The junior goalkeeper finished the game with six saves and kept the Tigers competitive throughout the match.
Missouri is still looking for its first goal since Sept. 12, when it overtook Texas in the SEC opener.
With the loss, the Tigers move to (4-9-1, 1-6 SEC), and stretch their losing streak to six games. They’ll continue to look to break that streak, as they begin the final three-game stretch of the regular season with a road trip to Texas A&M on Oct.16.
