Missouri soccer traveled to College Station, Texas, to take on Texas A&M Oct. 16. The Tigers ultimately fell 2-1 to the Aggies for their seventh straight loss in the Southeastern Conference.
Texas A&M reclaimed its earlier lead midway through the second half when senior defender Bella Yakel, who had committed the earlier handball that led to Missouri’s penalty, converted one of her own in the 73rd minute to put the Aggies back on top.
Missouri found the back of the net for the first time in over a month just before the halftime whistle. Junior midfielder Olivia Chianelli converted a penalty kick with two seconds left in the first half to tie the game 1-1.
The goal marked Chianelli’s third of the season, making her the Tigers’ leading scorer. It also snapped Missouri’s scoring drought, being their first goal since Sept. 12 against Texas.
The Tigers found themselves down early after the Aggies struck just three minutes into the match. Junior midfielder Kaylee Noble curled a shot into the top-left corner, giving A&M an early 1-0 advantage.
The Tigers showed fight late, outshooting the Aggies 10-8 in the second half after being outshot 5-3 in the first. Despite the improved attack, Missouri couldn’t find an equalizer before the final whistle.
Missouri’s motivated second-half offense forced sophomore keeper Maysen Veronda to step up for the Aggies, having six second-half saves.
First-year midfielder Aly Bryant earned her first career start for the Tigers, continuing to carve out a larger role in Missouri’s ever-changing midfield rotation.
With the loss, Missouri drops to (4-10-1, 1-7 SEC) and extends its losing streak to seven matches. The Tigers return home next week to face No. 7 Arkansas in their final home game of the year.
