Mizzou tennis participated in the ITA Central Regional Championship from Oct. 16-20th. Two Tigers, Gian Octa and Korina Roso ended up making it to the round of 16.
Graduate students Mary Brumfield and Michelle Kleynerman, as well as sophomore Korina Roso, entered the main draw of the tournament. Roso bested her opponent 6-4, 6-4 in the Round of 32, but then fell 1-6, 4-6 to Jayhawk senior Heike Janse Van Vuuren in the Round of 16.
Brumfield suffered a 6-3, 6-2 loss to the University of Oklahoma’s junior Chloé Noël in the Round of 32, while Kleynerman lost 6-3, 6-4 in the Round of 64.
Sophomores Zoe Lazar and Gian Octa, as well as freshman Alex Ackman, advanced to the Round of 32 of the tournament as qualifiers. Octa bested both her opponents on the first day, being the only one to qualify for the Women’s Open Singles main draw. She then suffered a 6-4, 6-2 loss to sophomore Katarina Pavlechova of Arkansas.
Lazar secured her first win against sophomore Hanmare McAslin of Arkansas State. She then fell to freshman Martaa Chogsomjav of Kansas State, playing for three sets in the Round of 32.
Ackman and sophomore Julie Bedard both had losses, Bedard falling short 6-4, 6-3 in the Round of 64 and Ackman losing 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 in the Round of 32.
In the Women’s Open Doubles, Kleynerman-Bedard, Brumfield-Andrea Artimedi and Lazar-Roso all secured wins in the doubles match and advanced to the Round of 32.
Lazar and Roso, as well as Brumfield and Artimedi, made it to the Round of 16 before suffering losses. Kleynerman and Berdad were defeated 8-5 in the Round of 32 by Wichita State’s juniors Giorgia Roselli and Xin Tong Wang. Octa and Ackman were defeated 8-6 in the Round of 64.
Despite a short weekend, the Tigers still showed off their skill and have significantly improved their diligence.
“We have shown great progress since our last tournament,” head coach Silvia Chinellato said. “Our goal is to become stronger competitors, and we’ve accomplished that.”
The Tigers will head to San Diego State Nov. 7-9 to participate in the SDSU Fall Classic.
