Columbia Police Department officers arrested a 20-year-old suspect on charges of beating the mother of his child and assaulting her sister with a handgun.
Cortez Brimmage was arrested Monday at the Eastwood Motel and charged with second-degree domestic assault and second-degree assault. He was also arrested on a felony warrant for possession of dangerous drugs and armed criminal action, CPD spokeswoman Jill Wieneke said.
On Jan. 23, CPD officers were called to the emergency room at University Hospital after two sisters were assaulted.
“They both had injuries to their faces, black eyes, lacerations, head injuries,” Wieneke said.
One of the women, who has a child with Brimmage, had gone to a house on Jefferson Street where she found Brimmage in a bedroom with another women. The two started fighting and the victim was beaten and assaulted by other people at the house as well as Brimmage.
The victim’s sister got out of their car to go help her sister and was beaten as well. As she was yelling for 911, Brimmage came over her and started beating her with his gun. Once the women got away, they called 911, Wieneke said.
When officers came to the house later that night, no one would answer the door at first. Then two women who assisted in beating the two sisters came out and were arrested.
Officers then found a third suspect walking the streets that night who was arrested. CPD has warrants out for the other four suspected of being involved in the attack.
On Monday around 9:30 p.m., CPD officers received an anonymous tip that Brimmage was at the Eastwood Motel. Officers gave Brimmage’s description to the hotel receptionist and they matched it to Brimmage who had rented a room.
When officers went to the hotel room door, initially no one would answer, but then the ex-girlfriend came out with her and Brimmage’s child. She was not being held there against her will. Officers then arrested Brimmage.
