Marcus Kelly, 37, is charged with driving while intoxicated, resisting or interfering with arrest, possession of less than 35 grams of marijuana and disturbing the peace after a car chase that led to his arrest Thursday.
Officers of the Columbia Police Department responded to a disturbance at 3500 Clark Lane at about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.
According to a CPD news release, officers interviewed a store clerk at Tiger Stop and viewed video of the suspect at the store. The clerk reportedly told police Kelly acted aggressively, making threats to return to the store and kill her.
“For no reason apparently, he started accusing her of calling the police, which she had not done,” CPD spokeswoman Jill Wieneke said.
Wieneke said when Kelly went outside, he gestured to the clerk, pretending his hand was a gun.
Kelly allegedly yelled to the victim, saying, “You gonna get robbed tonight, and you’re not gonna live.”
On Thursday, officers responded to a sighting of Kelly acting strangely at the Petro Mart at 2200 W. Ash St.
Officers discovered Kelly’s car traveling east near Aldeah Avenue, the release stated. Kelly refused to pull over, and a pursuit was initiated.
“(Kelly) pulled over two different times,” Wieneke said. “Each time the officer got out to approach the car, he’d take off driving again.”
The pursuit ended when Kelly pulled over near the intersection of Short Street and E. Walnut Street and was taken into custody.
“I guess he just gave up because he figured out we weren’t going to stop following him,” Wieneke said.
Kelly was previously charged with careless and imprudent driving, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving without headlights, third-degree assault and making a terroristic threat, but those charges have not yet been filed. Kelly’s total bond is set at $8,000.
