A preliminary hearing was set and a bond request was denied for freshman Justin Brown’s felony charges Monday.
Brown is facing multiple felony charges after MU Police Department officers searched his room in Defoe-Graham residence hall on Jan. 28. According to an MUPD news release, officers found Ecstasy pills, vials containing two different types of testosterone, three bottles of alcohol and glass pipes with residue. They also found thousands of dollars in cash, a digital scale and packing materials.
Judge Deborah Daniels previously ordered a bond investigation, and Brown’s attorney C. Douglas Shull filed a motion for bond reduction.
Shull previously requested Brown be allowed to post 10 percent of his bail and return to Kansas.
Daniels denied Shull’s request and said there were other options on the table.
“What that means is that Missouri would lose the ability to serve a warrant,” Daniels said in the hearing. “There are other options, like electronic monitoring, but I will not approve this particular request.”
The state requested a continuance to subpoena witnesses and Brown’s preliminary hearing was set for 2 p.m March 23.
Brown initially faced seven charges, but is now being prosecuted for three class B felonies. Brown is still listed as a freshman in the student directory.
