Boone County Sheriff’s Department officers responded to the 4300 block of Santa Barbara Drive on March 31 after witnesses reported hearing several shots in the street, a Sherriff’s Department news release stated.
When deputies arrived on the scene at 11:52 p.m., they were directed to 22-year-old Colin Greeson’s residence, located at 4361 Santa Barbara Drive. He and several others had been involved in an altercation on the street.
“It appears that Mr. Greeson was at home when a group of people left a bar,” Detective Tom O’Sullivan said, adding these people were Greeson’s neighbors. “They were having words with people at the bar, and then they left to go home, and I guess that the people they had the word with showed up on Santa Barbara.”
From there, O’Sullivan said the two groups were in the street arguing and creating a ruckus, which prompted Greeson to take action. At least one individual fired numerous shots, though it cannot be certain this person was Greeson, he said.
“We haven’t been able to determine who actually fired the shots,” O’Sullivan said. “The initial call was shots fired, and then we got some conflicting statements on who was responsible for actually firing the gun.”
Greeson allegedly pointed a pistol at a female bystander, threatening to kill her. Other than being neighbors, O’Sullivan said the two had no personal connection. The female left the incident unharmed.
The conflicting statements didn’t involve Greeson’s actions with the gun, however, so his charges remain the same.
“We don’t have conflicting statements regarding him pointing the gun at the lady,” O’Sullivan said. “That one’s pretty solid.”
Although the altercation occurred near Greeson’s home, O’Sullivan said the gun wielding could not be classified as an act of self-defense.
Deputies then proceeded to arrest Greeson for unlawful use of a weapon and third-degree assault. He is being held in Boone County Jail on a bond of $5,000. He was released on bond at 7:30 a.m. the next morning.
Post-arrest, Greeson’s residence was searched. Several firearms, marijuana and drug paraphernalia were discovered and seized. The investigation is now closed, O’Sullivan said.
“At this point, I’d say we’ve gleamed all of the information we were able to,” O’Sullivan said. “We tried to see if there was anybody else involved, but there was a number of conflicting statements. This case is pretty well closed.”
