Columbia Police Department officers are investigating a shots-fired incident, which occurred at the Waffle House at 904 Vandiver Drive before dawn Sunday. Officers were dispatched to the location at about 4 a.m. due to several reports of shots being fired, a CPD news release stated.
According to the news release, no injuries were reported, and there is no apparent motive.
The Waffle House incident was one of several shots-fired incidents reported to CPD in the past few weeks.
“We’ve had quite a bit of shots fired incidents within the past three weeks,” CPD spokeswoman Latisha Stroer said. “We’re not sure if they are related because we didn’t have any victims come forward and we don’t have any suspect information.”
Investigators interviewed the staff members working at the time of the incident in addition to other witnesses. Several unknown persons were involved in a physical disturbance in the parking lot and then shots were fired, the news release stated.
Witnesses told police they heard 10 shots during the incident and officers later found 10 shell casings with two different calibers, the release stated.
According to the release, at least one vehicle might have been struck by gunfire because of a visible fluid trail starting at the point a spent round was located.
Recent reports to CPD might indicate an increasing trend of shots-fired incidents throughout Columbia.
“We would have to run the numbers to know for sure, but to me it seems like we’ve had an increase of shots fired incidents,” Stroer said.
CPD asks that anyone who has information in reference to this shooting to contact the Columbia Police Department or Crime Stoppers at 875-TIPS (875-8477).
