Detectives found the suspect in two bank robberies with a self-inflicted cut wrist and heroin in his system Monday.
Columbia Police Department detectives served a search warrant at the 6000 block of South Gateview Drive, where they found Thaddeus Thompson, 30, a news release stated.
Thompson was charged with committing two bank robberies, one on Jul. 27 at Martinsburg Bank and Trust at the 200 block of East Nifong Boulevard and the other on Aug. 13 at Regions Bank, located at the 3000 block of Providence Road.
No one was injured in either robbery attempt, Stroer said.
“Once detectives received a tip saying Thompson had committed both, they were able to get a search warrant,” she said.
Once officers served their search warrant, they found Thompson had cut his wrist. He was taken into custody without incident and was treated at University Hospital Emergency Room, where heroin was found in his system.
After his release from the Emergency Room, he was processed at the Columbia Police Department and admitted involvement to both crimes. He was then committed to Biggs Forensic Center at Fulton State Hospital due to what appeared to be a suicide attempt.
“Biggs has a maximum security wing that is kept specifically for criminal with mental health issues,” Stroer said. “We aren’t exactly sure why he cut his wrists, but since he did, detectives felt it necessary to have him committed.”
Thompson is charged with two counts of first-degree robbery.
