This week was the third annual Freshman Action Team Week put on by the Legion of Black Collegians.
LBC president Whitney Williams said the Freshman Action Team is its own organization made up of freshman who want to be involved on campus. FAT elects a president, vice president and other positions. FAT Week is a week of activities that seeks to get freshmen involved with the team.
Whitney Williams said there is a FAT component to the Big 12 Conference on Black Student Government, where every year schools come together to compare their teams. MU hosted the Big 12 Conference on Black Student Government during the last academic year.
FAT chairman Marques Williams said that the students of FAT plan two to three events per semester.
“We like to give the power to the freshmen and let them decide what events to do and what community service to do,” Marques Williams said. “It gives them a way to organize around campus and gives them an environment to meet new people.”
Whitney Williams said FAT week is planned to help Marques Williams build up membership. She also said that Marques Williams took down student names in order to keep the freshmen involved in the organization.
“They completely run their own events, and he becomes more of a coordinator,” Whitney Williams said.
Whitney Williams said because FAT runs its own events, there are not many staple events each year, though it does have a few. Its Valentine’s Day speed-dating event was one of the biggest last year, and other repeat events include study halls around finals and community service.
“Community service is a big part of FAT,” Whitney Williams said.
Tuesday night was “Sexa-palooza” in Memorial Union, where two representatives from Sexual Health Advocate Peer Education gave a presentation. Whitney Williams said this was the first year they have hosted event with SHAPE.
Marques Williams said when choosing what events to put on, the team strived to balance educational and recreational activities.
“We wanted to make sure they’re having fun,” Marques Williams said. “But there’s a meaning behind everything.”
At the event, the representatives explained the use of several types of barrier methods of contraception and had the students participate in activities they called the “Condom Olympics.” The SHAPE representatives also answered questions from the students.
“The best part about these presentations is that we get to reach a lot of different groups of people, like the freshmen who are new to campus, and let them know who we are,” SHAPE representative Hannah Keel said.
The room was filed with laughter and students seemed to be enjoying themselves.
“It was a fun, funny presentation,” freshman Justin Cutts said.
Freshman Tre Eiland said he came because Cutts told him about it, but that he liked the idea of the FAT Week.
“We met a lot of people, both freshmen and upperclassman,” Eiland said. “It helps us get to know the campus and get to know other people.”
Events this week also included an ice cream party, a movie night and a presentation called “Law and Order” about the rules and regulations on campus. The events planned for Friday and Saturday have been cancelled.
“I have a flier on my wall,” Cutts said. “I plan on attending all of the events, if possible.”
