The trial for former MU tailback Derrick Washington, who is charged with sexual assault, begins Tuesday.
Washington’s legal troubles started in June 2010, when a former tutor placed a protection order against Washington, according to Boone County court documents.
Washington entered the victim’s room and assaulted her in her sleep while he was visiting her roommate, according to a campus detective’s probable cause statement. The case became dormant after both Washington and the alleged victim didn’t appear for a court hearing in July of that year, so prosecutors continued to investigate the case. Washington’s family hired a lawyer.
Washington was charged with one count of felony deviate sexual assault after two months of investigation, in August 2010.
Almost a month later, he allegedly refused to leave the apartment of an ex-girlfriend at 1:30 a.m. He was arrested in his apartment shortly after, and the victim was found with a swollen forehead and bloody nose. She also reported he choked her. He was charged with two counts of misdemeanor domestic violence.
Washington pleaded not guilty to all charges against him.
Boone County Assisting Prosecuting Attorney Andrea Hayes requested a panel of 80 jurors to be called Tuesday due to the nature of the case and trial. Washington has informed Circuit Judge Kevin Crane he will waive his right to a jury sentencing if found guilty.
Washington’s felony trial is expected to last two days. His misdemeanor trial is expected to be resolved Sept. 30, according to his attorneys.
