I’ve never been good at goodbyes — especially when it comes to my clothes. But every year around this fateful time, I’m forced to box up half my wardrobe and say sayonara to my summer sundresses until the long, cold winter is over.
But this year, I refuse to part with my summer staple pieces just yet. I’m determined to keep my summer clothes hanging in the closet and make the most of my warm weather wardrobe this autumn.
The transition from summer into fall can be trickier than trying to make gold lamé look classy. To make the transition as smooth as possible, here are some tips to maximize your wardrobe and make your summer pieces blend with fall fashion.
**Be Bold**
All too often, people make the mistake of packing up too many clothes because they’re known as “summer colors.” Corals, turquoises and yellows look great in the summer sun, but they can really make your autumn outfit pop as well. By wearing a splash of color and going against the tide, you’ll stand out in the sea of black and gray everyone else seems to be swimming in.
**Try Tights**
There’s nothing I love more than tights weather. Tights and leggings are my saving grace when the climate gets colder. With so many colors, textures and prints, you can wear them under virtually anything. Miniskirts, shorts and sundresses — the list goes on and on.
But the key word here is “under.” Please, please, _please_ don’t fall victim to the fashion faux pas of wearing them in place of pants. At the very least wear a tunic length top over them.
**Light Layers**
When it comes to picking out an outfit, there aren’t many things worse than getting caught off-guard by the weather. Layers are the perfect solution for Missouri’s unpredictable fall climate. For the days when it’s freezing in the morning but sunny and warm in the afternoon, you’ll be glad you can shed some clothes.
Thin, knit cardigans and light jackets can work wonders for your wardrobe. Layer them over your summery tank tops and sheer shirts to stay warm while looking cool. My favorite layered look: an edgy, leather jacket over a flirty, floral sundress.
**Show Some Skin**
Just because summer’s over doesn’t mean you have to cover yourself from head to toe. Don’t be afraid to show some skin in the fall, just do so sparingly. If you bare your legs in a knee-length skirt, wear long sleeves on top. If you wear pants, pair them with a v-neck, short-sleeve top. It’s all about creating a balance.
**Stick with Sandals**
Don’t forget about your sandals and peep toes just yet. Feel free to stretch out sandal season for as long as possible. By wearing your open-toe shoes with full-length skinny jeans, you’ll look pulled together rather than out of place. Skip the sandals only once your feet start to freeze.
**Accessorize for Autumn**
Scarves are my absolute favorite fall accessory. But before you reach for that warm, wool scarf, consider going with a more lightweight one. It’ll keep your neck warm without overheating your body. Scarves with brighter colors and floral patterns are also a great way to bring your summer style into your autumn attire. Throwing one on over a plain shirt and jacket can effortlessly change the entire appearance of your outfit.
