There is nothing greater than the start of fall. The summer humidity vanishes, the leaves change colors and Starbucks starts serving pumpkin spice lattes again. But the best part of fall has to be the fashion. From textured tights and cable-knit sweaters to cozy scarves and colorful berets, fall clothes can’t beat — with one exception, of course:
**Flip-flops**
Let’s face it: When you’re forced to walk around campus all day long, it’s easy to see why flip-flops are the go-to shoe of choice, weather permitting. They’re easy to slip on, comfortable, cheap and go with just about any outfit. But with fall’s windy weather on its
way, they just aren’t practical anymore.
If you’re looking to get off on the right foot for fall, forget the flip-flops. To keep your feet both comfy and cozy this autumn, try the following shoes on for size:
**Ballet flats**
If a put-together, classic look is what you’re going for, ballet flats are your best bet. They come in the simplest to the dressiest of styles, and can be worn with so many different outfits. In my opinion, flats look the most stylish worn with a pair of dark wash skinny
jeans or with tights and a fitted skirt.
**Riding boots**
My favorite trend in fall footwear has to be leather (or leatherette, if you’re on a college student’s budget like me) riding boots. They look best in neutral, classic colors such as black, charcoal, brown and cognac. Like ballet flats, they can give your outfit an effortless, polished look. Wear them with tights and a dress, skinny jeans or leggings.
**Rain boots**
Obviously, rain boots are perfect for, well, rainy days. But they also work great in slush, sleet and snow. On days when you don’t want to risk ruining your new suede snow boots, water resistant rubber rain boots will do the trick.
**Ugg Boots**
I hate to admit it, but Ugg boots are perhaps the comfiest cold weather footwear out there. I refuse to own a pair just because everybody else does, but if you don’t mind, then by all means go for it. They’re great for tucking in jeans, sweatpants, leggings — you name it.
**Booties**
Booties (a.k.a. shorties) are definitely the most fashion forward of fall footwear. Although some are flat, most have heels on them. This combination between a boot and a shoe instantly dresses up any outfit, while still being relatively easy to walk in compared to other high heels.
**Clogs**
Clogs might not be the most stylish of shoes, but they sure are easy to wear. Reserve them for casual days, and pair them with flared jeans and a sweatshirt.
**Moccasins**:
The same goes for moccasins — keep it casual. Try them with skinny jeans or leggings and an oversized sweater for a relaxed but trendy look.
**Crocs**:
OK, just kidding!
