If the name Jason Wu sounds familiar to you, that’s because it should. Wu practically became a household name after being selected by First Lady Michelle Obama herself as her dress designer for the 2009 Inauguration Ball. At the sight of her jaw-dropping, white fairytale gown, fashion figures everywhere wanted to work with Wu.
The 29-year-old Taiwan-born designer continued dressing the First Lady for events and quickly shot to fame in the fashion industry. Today, he continues to design ready-to-wear collections seen on celebrities worldwide. But if his runway looks don’t fit your college student budget, don’t be discouraged, you’ll soon be able to get Wu’s designs at discount prices.
Target officially has announced that Wu will be the store’s next designer-collaborator. The discount retail chain’s Designer Collaborations Program features limited-time-only clothing and decor from different designers’ collections at everyday low prices — prices so low, in fact, that pieces from Wu’s collection will range from $20 to $60!
Michelle Obama has been known to step out in more reasonably priced clothes from stores like J. Crew, H&M and Gap. Who knows, perhaps we’ll soon see her in her in one of her favorite designer’s more affordable frocks.
Wu’s Target line will feature women’s clothing, scarves and other accessories. Wu’s collection allegedly will also be the first Target collaboration line to include women’s handbags. According to Wu, the line is heavily inspired by the ’60s. One sketch from the upcoming line released by Target shows an Audrey Hepburn-esque tea length black dress that I can already hear calling my name. Other designs feature yellow polka dots and floral prints, among other classic retro looks.
Wu’s line is much anticipated and expected to sell out instantly, as has happened with past designers’ collections. Target’s most recent designer collection with Italian luxury brand Missoni was so popular that shoppers nationwide swarmed the stores and even crashed the website, selling out stocks of items within hours. If history repeats itself, you’ll want to keep your eyes peeled for Wu’s collection as soon as it hits stores this spring on Feb. 5.
For a sneak peak of some of Wu’s sketches and fabrics for the collection, be sure to check out Target’s Twitter page and see what all the hype is about. All I can say is prepare to be wooed by Jason Wu for Target.
